History

The Buccaneer's Rugby Club is reputed to have been formed one sunny morning in 1963, when a visiting Royal Navy frigate docked in nassau and announced that they had a rugby team. As always in Nassau, the rumour spread faster than a speeding postman, and at around 4pm that same day, a motley bunch of enthusiasts in an awesome variety of jerseys' assembled to play the ship at the graveyard end of Eastern Parade. Positions were allotted and the Buccs were born.

The results of that match are lost to posterity, but the motley bunch officially formed the club in 1964 and the Buccaneers have been active ever since. The first two official years saw the Buccs undefeated (sadly this has not remained in our entire history!) and over the years the club has won every available honor. Buccaneers can claim to be the source of Bahamaian Rugby, having split on several occasions to spin off other teams, of whom are Freeport Rugby Football Club (est 1965) and Balliou Rugby Football Club (est 1967) are the only survivors. The lastest club on the Bahamas scene is the Cuckoo's Rugby Football Club, who have both an A side and a B side.

The club is known throughout the Rugby-playing Caribbean and the United States from the many tours it has both made and hosted. Locally competition is restricted to the New Providence Cup and the Bahamas Cup, which includes the Freeport Club in Grand Bahama, however we would not have a full sessions without the fifteen or so incoming American sides and Royal Navy ships.

Buccaneers tour twice each season, in early December to Florida or otherwise economically, and at Easter to somewhere more exotic.

Off the field the club is known for the excellence of the social functions, notably the Annual and New Year's Dinner Dances and the Children's Christmas Party, and also for the hospitality extended to visiting sides.

Buccs were sponsored from 1980 to 1996 by Beck's Bier, and have come to be closely associated with Becks, particularly from the economical availablity and vigourous consumption of said beverage in the Clubhouse. The clubhouse is currently located at the Winton Field, but has moved on several occasions, each time with more trophies, plaques, mementos and bar equipment. In 2000 the Bucaneer's were sponsored by Rothman's. We are currently sponsored by Security and General and have been for the past several years. We have an additional sponsor fro the past 2 years of Marlin Marine.

The playing and social membership of Buccs has varied over the years. In earlier years it was bolstered each season as a new batch of young expariates arrived to work in Nassau, and trimmed as others returned to (usually colder) climates. The emergence over recent years of Bahamian players in greater in greater numbers has now built a nucleus that ensures the successful continuance of Bahamas Rugby in general and the Buccaneers in particular.
